e-Dex Hash Tool — Free Online Hash Calculator
Generate SHA-256, SHA-512, SHA3, BLAKE3, MD5 and more, instantly. 100% in your browser — your file never leaves your device, and nothing is uploaded.
How to verify a file checksum (in 3 steps)
- Get the official hash. Copy the SHA-256 (or other) checksum the software publisher lists next to the download.
- Hash your downloaded file. In the calculator above, choose the same algorithm, then drag your file onto the drop zone — it is hashed locally in your browser.
- Compare the hashes. Paste the publisher's hash into the “Compare with an expected hash” box. A green MATCH means the file is authentic and untampered; NO MATCH means it was altered or corrupted, so do not use it.
Hash calculator — FAQs
Is this online hash calculator safe and private?
Yes. Hashing happens entirely in your browser using the Web Crypto API and WebAssembly. Your file is never uploaded — it never leaves your device, so even confidential files are safe to hash here.
What is a SHA-256 checksum?
SHA-256 is a cryptographic hash function that turns any file into a fixed 64-character fingerprint. Changing a single byte changes the fingerprint completely, which is what makes it ideal for verifying file integrity.
Which hash algorithm should I use?
Use SHA-256 for general integrity and security — it is the modern default. SHA-512, SHA3 and BLAKE3 are also strong. MD5 and SHA-1 are fast but cryptographically broken; use them only to match a legacy checksum, never for security.
Can I hash large files in the browser?
Yes. The file is processed locally, so the practical limit is mainly your device's available memory. Very large files of several gigabytes may take a moment to load before the hash appears.
How do I create a signed certificate of a file hash?
This page computes hashes only. To produce a signed, timestamped integrity certificate of a file — for evidence, audit or compliance — download e-Dex, the free desktop app.
What is an e-Dex?
In today’s digital environment, where electronic documents and digital evidence play a critical role in investigations and compliance, maintaining data integrity has become essential. Any unauthorized modification can compromise the authenticity of sensitive information.
Our e-Dex generates a unique cryptographic hash value, often referred to as a digital fingerprint, for any type of file including documents, images, audio, video, and even messaging data such as WhatsApp records.
Even the smallest change in a file results in a completely different hash value. This makes it extremely effective for detecting tampering instantly and ensuring that the data remains authentic, secure, and legally reliable.

Pre-filled electronic-evidence certificate under Section 63 BSA 2023 or Section 65B IEA, with the literal Part A / Part B Schedule form.
Digital Signature & Timestamp
Sign the certificate with your DSC (PAdES) — USB token or keystore — plus an RFC‑3161 trusted timestamp proving when it existed.
Self-Verifying Evidence Packs
Bundle the case into a standards-based BagIt pack anyone can verify with no install — manifests plus CASE‑UCO / DFXML provenance, all sealed.
Chain of Custody
Record seized / received / transferred / analysed steps in an append-only, hash-chained ledger — rendered on the certificate and sealed in the pack.
Certificate Generator — One Engine, Many Certificates
e-Dex generates court-ready certificates for many evidence types from a single template-driven engine — not a separate hard-coded screen per certificate. Each one is sealed with SHA-256, optionally signed and timestamped, numbered in a register, and re-verifiable offline.
Many Certificate Types
Electronic Evidence, Chain of Custody, File / System Integrity, CCTV / Video Evidence and Backup / Audit Integrity — all from one engine, with counsel-editable wording.
Specialist Templates
Purpose-built templates capture the right particulars — camera, recorder and recording window for CCTV; job, source and schedule for backups — then hash, verify and seal them.
Certificate Register
Every certificate gets a register number. Regenerate one after a correction and the earlier copy is marked superseded, so the case file always shows which certificate is current.
Offline Re-Verification
Re-open any certificate in e-Dex to re-check its PAdES signature (document unmodified) and its RFC‑3161 timestamp — entirely offline, no internet, no Adobe.

How Forensic Teams Use e-Dex
Three day-in-the-life stories from the people who use e-Dex in real investigations, audits, and compliance work.
The Forensic Investigator — 50 hash operations per case, every one logged
A drive arrives in evidence at 08:30. By 17:00, the investigator has logged it, imaged it, computed MD5 + SHA-256 of both original and copy, hashed every file before and after examination, written today's section of the report, and signed everything. That's 50+ hash operations in a single shift — each one a row in chain-of-custody documentation that someone will scrutinize three months from now.
A general-purpose hash utility leaves you to glue all of that together yourself, in a spreadsheet, with screenshots, hoping you don't miss a step.
e-Dex was built for this entire workflow: per-case database files everything under the right case, per-file audit-log entries are written automatically and hash-chained, multi-algorithm hashing runs MD5 + SHA-256 in a single pass, snapshots capture the state of the image at intake, and HTML reports are sealed with their own integrity hash. It's the difference between “I tracked everything” and “the tool tracked everything for me, and I can prove it.”
The IT Auditor — “Did any of these 8,000 files change since last quarter?”
That's the question every internal IT audit eventually comes down to. And it's the question most teams can't answer with confidence.
The typical workflow: last audit, someone exported a list of files with sizes and timestamps. Today, someone re-runs the export, diffs it, finds 600 lines of “size changed” — including hundreds of false positives because a Windows indexer touched the file. Three days of manual review.
With e-Dex's Snapshot & Verify, that audit takes minutes. Save a snapshot at last quarter's close. Today, load it, point it at the folder, click “Verify.” Output: exactly which files matched, changed, are missing, or are new. No false positives. Hash-level diff. The HTML report is sealed with its own integrity hash — audit-binder-ready in one click.
The Compliance Officer — “Prove this record has not been altered”
You're being asked to attest, in writing, that records have not been altered. But the systems you're attesting on top of are usually black boxes you can only trust.
A regulator asks: “How do you know this contract archive has not been edited?” The honest answer for most teams is: “We have access controls.” Access controls are a deterrent. They are not proof.
Proof is a hash, recorded at archive time, verified now, with the verification itself logged in a tamper-evident audit trail. e-Dex gives you exactly that — snapshots at any compliance milestone (quarter-end, audit, fiscal year close, regulatory filing), verification on demand, hash-chained audit log of every step, and self-integrity HTML reports.
The story you can now tell a regulator: “Here is the snapshot taken on X date. Here is today's verification. Here is the audit log showing every step. Here is the integrity hash for this report. You can recompute any of it. Nothing here requires you to trust me.” That's what attestation should look like.

For Government & Regulated Industriese-Dex Frequently Asked Questions
Is e-Dex free to download?
Yes. e-Dex is free to download for evaluation. Multi-seat commercial licensing is available for forensic labs, audit teams, and government departments — talk to Pallavi on +91 8484859088.
Which hash algorithms does it support?
MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512, SHA3-256, SHA3-512, RIPEMD-160, BLAKE2b, BLAKE3, Whirlpool and more — via the Bouncy Castle cryptography library. Multiple algorithms run in a single streaming pass through the file.
Does e-Dex work offline?
Yes. e-Dex runs entirely on your local machine. It does not require an internet connection, does not transmit your case data anywhere, and does not call home. Ideal for air-gapped forensic workstations.
Will e-Dex modify my evidence files?
No. By design, e-Dex is strictly read-only on the source media you examine — it never deletes, modifies, renames, moves, or truncates the files being analyzed. Use hardware write-blockers where your forensic procedure requires them.
What makes the audit log tamper-evident?
Every entry in the audit log is hash-chained to the previous entry via SHA-256. Any attempt to silently rewrite an old entry breaks the chain, and the next verification cycle catches the tampering immediately. This gives you chain-of-custody documentation that defends itself.
What operating systems does it support?
e-Dex runs on Windows 10 and Windows 11 (64-bit). The installer is self-contained — you do not need to install Java separately. macOS and Linux builds are on the roadmap.
Is e-Dex admissible as evidence in court?
Admissibility of digital evidence is determined by the rules of evidence of the relevant court, by the expert qualifications of the person tendering the evidence, and by the chain-of-custody actually followed — not by any tool alone. e-Dex produces hash-chained audit logs and self-integrity reports that support a defensible chain of custody, but the final admissibility decision rests with the court.
